I was perusing the first Wholphin DVD last night and came across the wonderful Al Gore documentary Spike Jonze shot circa 1999. As the story goes, Jonze was contacted by Gore’s campaign manager about doing some commercials for the 2000 election. Rather than craft a conventional TV spot, Jonze decided to shoot a short documentary profiling Gore and his family, since he didn’t really know much about the candidate’s personality or politics. The result is a personal portrait of a family man and an individual possessing vast integrity. This was just what middle America needed to see, since most voters probably viewed Gore as cold and aloof. Yet Jonze’s video reveals a man who is personable, self effacing, and surprisingly ordinary. I mean, Gore was actually considering watching a VHS copy of The Patriot at one point in the documentary.

Unfortunately, the public never got to see Jonze’s video. It was never aired on TV. I think it was shown during the Democratic Convention, but my understanding is the Gore campaign thought it was too amateurish to show on TV. That’s too bad, because this video could have swayed a lot of people who vote based on what kind of person they think a presidential candidate is. And hands down, Gore is the better family man. It would have been fascinating to see Jonze follow around GW and family in a similar fashion back in ’99…although I imagine that would have been painful to watch.
